Paralegal Association Constitution

Milwaukee Area Technical College

The Principal purpose of this organization is to promote job opportunities in the community, increase awareness of the Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) Paralegal Program in the community, and to assist MATC faculty and staff in developing a paralegal program which is a value to the students, school, and community.

The name of this organization shall be the Milwaukee Area Technical College Paralegal Association.

  1. Any student at MATC enrolled in the Paralegal Program on either a full-time or part-time basis may become a member. There shall be no limitations on the size of this organization.
  2. Any student at MATC enrolled in the Paralegal Program on either a full-time or part-time basis may become a member. There shall be no limitations on the size of this organization.
  3. Membership shall be divided into the following two classes:
    • Voting members:
      A voting member shall be a current student at MATC enrolled in the Paralegal Program on a full-time or part-time basis.
    • Non-voting members:
      A non-voting member shall be an honorary member of this organization.
  1. The officers of this organization shall consist of a president, vice-president, recording secretary, correspondence secretary, treasurer, historian, and special events organizers. The officers shall be elected by voting members for a term of one year or until their successors are elected.
  2. To qualify as an officer of this organization, the person must be an active member of the Paralegal Program, have a grade point average of at least 2.0, and have at least one year left in the program.
  3. Elections are to be held once a year at the last meeting in May by taking nominations from the floor and then voting on those nominations.
  4. Voting by proxy may be allowed for voting members who cannot attend the election meeting by voting electronically to the association instructor advisor.
  5. If an officer should withdraw from the organization or give up their position for any reason, the president shall appoint an interim officer to serve the vacancy until the next regular election is held.

Faculty advisors shall be any of the day school instructors of the Paralegal Program.

  1. Meetings shall be held monthly from September through May at such a time and place as may be determined by the officers. When necessary, the president has the authority to call a special meeting.
  2. A quorum for voting purposes on any matter shall consist of those voting members present at the meeting.
  3. The principal location for meetings of this organization shall be at the Downtown Campus.
  4. When appropriate, Roberts Rules of Order shall be followed.

Amendment of this constitution requires previous notification and two-thirds affirmative vote of those present and voting.

Ratification of this constitution requires a two-thirds affirmative vote of those present and voting.
